A difficult week
It’s been a difficult week.
It’s been a difficult week, no matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on.
A man was murdered in cold blood in public.
As a citizen, I am outraged. I’m outraged that our country has become a place where the solution to disagreement is violence. What happened on Wednesday is nothing new. It happens all over the world, and it’s happened for millennia. But Charlie Kirk’s assassination was a stark reminder that every inch we give to evil, it takes a mile — before we know it, it’s plopped in our living rooms.
As a wife, I am sick-to-my-stomach heartbroken. I cannot imagine the overwhelming grief and rage Erika felt when her husband was taken from her and the incredible toll this tragedy will have on her and her children for the rest of their lives.
As a mother, I can’t help but feel a little fearful. I (and I imagine many other moms like me) woke up to the fact that there are people out to do us and our children harm. If we don’t walk away from this tragedy with an understanding of the spiritual forces working tirelessly to infiltrate our families, then we’ve gravely missed the point.
I am all of those things all at one. But most importantly, as a believer, I am energized to share my faith and speak out boldly. I am also comforted. Nothing takes God by surprise, and He is always in control.
However you feel about Charlie Kirk, he lived a courageous life. He was never a perfect man (and I bet he’d be the first to admit to that fact), but he spoke the truth in love, shared his faith without wavering, and won many lives for Christ. And for that he was hated; for that he was cut down.
There’s no revenge to be exacted here, nor will there be anything close to justice meted out. Not for Charlie, not for the students at Evergreen High School, not for Iryna Zarutska, not for anyone who has lost or will lose their lives at the hands of evildoers.
But a day is coming when perfect justice will be served. When wrongs will finally be righted.
What we do now is pray. Pray for peace and protection for the Kirk family, for blessing and success on the TPUSA team, and for godly wisdom for our nation and her leaders.
We also pray for those who have done and will seek to do harm. Pray that the Holy Spirit might reach into their lives and turn them towards their Creator and Savior. No one is too far gone to come back home. Revenge is not ours — all we can do is echo Jesus’ words on the cross: “Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.”
Remember, “…our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
Spiritual warfare is real, and it’s here. It’s in our world, nation, and neighborhoods. Guard your family against it, but don’t be afraid to stand boldly in its way and confront it, either.
This is not a red and blue issue: This is a matter of good and evil. And "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good….To act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."
